So You Want To Organize?
.) Gather a small group and learn what’s happening in your area. I suggest using the Google Doc in the first link to determine what companies are close by. Remember to keep conversations on a platform that is end-to-end encrypted, like Telegram, or my favorite, Signal.
.) Narrow down your target. In addition to determining what target would make the largest impact, factors such as distance, connection via public transport, or other accessibility factors like paved sidewalks or short march routes should be considered.
.) With your group begin researching your selected company and the area it’s in. Consider researching local politicians and uncovering any investments or campaign donations they have associated with these companies. It may be a good idea to designate roles amongst your group so each subject is thoroughly researched. Don’t be afraid to fact-check behind one another!
.) Organize this info until it includes the most relevant information to your area and cause. This is a great time to narrow down useful information into easy-to-read infographics that you can reuse throughout organizing or developing a website for future information sharing. Create proposals and begin rehearsing how a discussion on this subject would look.
.) Once you and your group have a goal, a target, and organized information compiled into proposals, start scheduling proposal meetings with organizations, leftist businesses, and activists in your area. A list or organizations and groups is attached above as a starting point. Backing from established organizations is safer, more structured, and allows you access to the community and resources they’ve already built. Not only is this working smarter, not harder, but it will help you establish long-lasting ties in your community that you can continue to build off of for more impact. I suggest attending events in person and speaking to organizers directly, however, lots of organizations can be reached via social media or designated contact forms on their sites. Once you have meetings scheduled, bring your resources and some selected members of your group who are prepared to speak and begin sharing what you’ve learned, your goals, and some proposals for direct actions (a march route, a social media campaign, a rally at a location, etc).
